PA Tax Update: Department of Revenue to send billing notices for personal & trust tax returns

August 29, 2023

PA Department of Revenue notifies the PICPA that billing notices will be mailed

The PA Department of Revenue (DOR) recently advised the Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs (PICPA) that the Department will be mailing approximately 100,000 billing notices for 2022 PA Personal Income Tax Returns. It appears these billing notices are the result of the inability of the PA DOR to match some PIT tax payments to amounts reported per the returns.

In addition, some Pennsylvania CPAs have reported that similar billing notices are being mailed for 2022 PA trust income tax returns.

Action is required if you receive a billing notice from the PA Department of Revenue

If you receive a billing notice from the PA DOR, we recommend contacting us to assist with the follow-up. We can check our records of the PA tax payments you provided for the preparation of the return, and refer to notes we may have from attempting to confirm tax payments on the PA DOR website.

Based on our experience, and what we know from discussions with other CPAs in Pennsylvania, in many instances these billing notices are simply the result of a payment that was not properly posted or matched by the DOR – and the issue can be resolved with a phone to the DOR or accessing tax payment information on the myPATH.gov website within the DOR.

If there is in fact a payment due, we can advise and assist you with how to properly make the payment and resolve the matter.
